This is a study for three New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) communities in Coney Island that suffered considerable damage during Superstorm Sandy: Gravesend Houses, Surfside Gardens and O'Dwyer Gardens. Together these campuses have the potential to create a link of public open spaces between Coney Island Beach and Coney Island Creek. While it is imperative that these campuses be rebuilt to ensure the safety of residents during future storm events, we also saw this as an opportunity to address a number of pressing urban design issues and opportunities.
We saw an opportunity to advance a more comprehensive to make these communities more resilient, more integrated with their neighborhood and more responsive to their residents’ needs. This proposal braids three concerns:
WATER, CONNECTIVITY AND COMMUNITY
